The Russian Semantic Dictionary is a six-volume publication in which the system of modern Russian vocabulary in general use is described, arranged in hierarchical classes. The basic unit of description is the word meaning; word meanings are grouped according to the parts of speech, and further on lexical-semantic class and subclass. The whole dictionary contains about 300,000 lexical units. Each volume is a complete book, and can be used independently from the others. This dictionary was prepared by scholars from the Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language led by N.Iu. Shvedova (1916-2009). Volume two contains nouns (words and separate meanings), which name material products of human activity. They denote places, tilled plots of land, roads, organizations, establishments, labor products. Thing names associated with shape, condition, composition, location, usage can also be found in the volume. Lexical units are grouped into lexico-semantic classes, sets and subsets, their inner structure is mirrored in attached charts. The present volume includes 40,000 words and idioms. Index, 97 charts.
