The reign of Aleksei Mikhailovich (1645-1676), the second Romanov Tsar, was the longest and possibly the most important one in the history of 17th century Russia. It is surprising how many things he managed to accomplish, and how many events happened during this period. One of the most significant new laws was the Church reform. It was conducted on the initiative of Tsar Alexis, though patriarch Nikon was fully entrusted with its implementation.
