This monograph deals with the theme of Jewish assimilation in the literature of the Russian Empire. There were two main visions of this process: "complete and sincere conversion" and “false conversion” when a convert did not in fact change his religious identity. In her doctoral thesis Gabriela Safran studies the views of four authors of various ethnic and confessional backgrounds on the essence of Jewish assimilation in Russia: Jew Grigorii Bogrov, Polish Catholic Eliza Orzeszkowa, and two Russian Orthodox Christians A. Chekhov and N. Leskov. Bibliography. Name index.
