This is an abridged version of the lectures of Mikhail Nestorovich Speranskii (1863-1938) given at Moscow University. The famous historian stated various approaches and theories about Old Russian literature of two periods: Kievan (X-XIII) and Muscovite (XVI-XVII). The author analyzes the best known spiritual and secular old manuscripts from historical, linguistic, and ethnographic perspectives. M. Speranskii was arrested along with many other well known literary historians and philologists ("delo Slavistov") but was released without the right to work.
