The authors of this collection of articles are St. Petersburg ethnographers and orientalists. They show that etiquette regulations of specific ethnic entities are closely linked with traditional outlooks. These outlooks date back to archaic times, and are sometimes unconsciously preserved in Oriental traditional societies at the time of their modernization. The ethnic groups examined are the Viets, Taos, Burmese, Indonesians, Ifugao of the Philippines, and Javanese. The book studies such ethnic communicative stereotypes as verbal formulas, gestures, and postures used in greetings; conversational attitudes; notions of propriety in the relationship between sexes; regulation of behavior toward the elderly and those higher in rank; and the symbolism of parts of the body.
