From 1839 to 1840 and in 1873 the Russian army undertook several campaigns against the hostile Khanate of Khiva (in present day Uzbekistan). Their purpose was to stop raids, to free prisoners of war and ensure peace and trade in the steppe regions. At the cost of enormous efforts and huge losses Russian soldiers managed to defeat the enemy and make the Khivans sign a peace agreement. This book is a reprint of part of the fundamental work "The History of the conquest of Central Asia", last published in 1906. Its author, Lieutenant General M.A. Terent`ev, is known not only as a military historian, but as the creator of the first Russian language textbook for schools in Central Asia.(0.375 kg.)
