The first Kazakh democratic elections took place on 1/10/99 (a year ahead of schedule) and were rather controversial: the democratic process was violated, and experts doubt their legitimacy. The incumbent president Nazarbaev used brute force to make his opponent withdraw his candidacy. Some 50 articles, mainly from Western periodicals from the period between October 1998 and February 1999, present a panoramic picture of Western reaction to these events.
