This book is about the history of the publication of the series of documentary studies initiated and sponsored by Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich. These publications cover the main historical cemeteries of pre-revolutionary Russia: Moscow necropolis (3 volumes, 1907-1908); St. Peterburg necropolis (4 vols., 1912-1913); Russian provincial necropolis (1 vol., 1914) and Russian necropolis abroad (1 vol., 1915). The current volume traces the phases of this project, biographical data of its participants, sources and methods of studies, the materials which were not included in the original publications.
