The Author, using recently declassified Communist Party and KGB documents, investigates the relations between the Soviet State and the Russian Orthodox Church. The period under investigation starts with the Great Patriotic War, when Stalin changed his previous policy of persecution, and permitted some activity to Church authorities, many priests and hierarchy members were liberated from GULAG, and the Church aided the state in the war against Nazi Germany, and it ends in the years of the renewed furious atheistic campaign and closing of churches and monasteries in the Khrushchev era. Preface by Prof. M. I. Odintsov. List of archival and published sources. Name index.
