Pinkhas Kaganovich (pseudonym Der Nister, 1884-1950) is one of the most significant writers in Yiddish literature. He was born in the city of Berdichev, which holds a special place in Jewish literature. Shalom-Aleichem called the town the "Jewish Paris". This novel traces the history of several generation of a Jewish family in Berdichev. Kaganovich was arrested in 1949 and died in a soviet camp.
