According to military historian Igor Drogovoz (b. 1962), the army of the USSR participated in 18 wars in 1950-1991. Russian soldiers fought in various parts of the world to protect the geopolitical interests and bring socialism to the countries of the so called "The Third World". The 19th war in Afghanistan coincided with the fall of oil prices that caused the fall of the USSR.
