In 1937 Marshal of Soviet and Polish armies Konstantin Rokossovskii (1896-1968), along with many other top officers, was arrested but released in 1940 and restored to his office of division commander. He distinguished himself in the battle of Stalingrad, when the Russian army under his leadership destroyed over three hundred thousand soldiers of the German army led by F. Paulus.
