This book by a well-known novelist is the fruit of the author`s search for his identity and his historical roots. It is an essay of reconstruction of his great-great-grandfather, memoirs that existed but perished in the years of the Patriotic War. The main personage is the Russian nobleman and officer Alexander Oleksin, who lived in the first half of the 19th century. He participated in the Caucasian war, was acquainted with the poet Aleksandr Pushkin, kept some of the poet`s illegal poems, and was persecuted and punished for it in the reign of the Emperor Nicholas I.
