This paper is based on the authors` field materials from the Republic of Abkhazia, collected in the villages of the Gudauta District (Lukhny, Duripsh) and Ochamchira District (Chlou, Dzhgerda) in 2003-2005. Major demographic changes, recorded in every village in the study, include remarkable decreases in population longevity indices. The main reasons for these and other negative changes are discussed in the paper.
