The data on the history of begging in China is presented in comparative perspective. Historical continuity in begging traditions are demonstrated. Cross-cultural analysis of begging strategies and success in their application are analyzed in the light of ethological approach. Beggars - givers interactions are also in the center of the author`s attention. Factors influencing the main shifts in official attitude towards beggars are revealed. A separate chapter deals with the theoretical issues of the evolutionary origin of altruism and sharing in humans.
