Ed. and comp. by Aleksei Lidov
Moscow: Indrik, 2009 910 p pbk. 16 x 23 cm ISBN: 9785916740516 Language: Russian and English
This collection continues the series of publications on the creation and copying of sacred spaces as a special type of creativity in the Christian culture. One of the best examples of this activity was the New Jerusalem conceived and designed by Patriarch Nikon in the 17th century near Moscow. This complex was a part of the idea of the sacralization of Rus and turning it into a new Holy Land and chosen place of Judgment Day. The contributors to the current volume study the creation of sacred spaces from the beginning of the Christian era to the present and compare the experience of Byzantium and Old Rus with the practice of Western European. The collection continues publications: Jerusalem in Russian Culture (1994); Eastern Christian Church: Liturgy and art (1994), Eastern Christian relics (2003); The Iconostasis: Origins - Evolution - Symbolism (2000), Ierotopiia: Sozdanie Sakral`nykh Prostranstv v Vizantii i Drevnei Rusi (2006); Ierotopiia. Sakral`nye Issledovaniia Sakral`nykh Prostranstv (2009), and others (some of them are still available). Parallel text in Russian and English. Profusely illustrated.
