This volume enbraces the first three fascicles of the encyclopedic lexicon published in 1999-2001 (255 entries). It represents an attempt of a comprehensive study of Islam in the former Russian Empire and the USSR. The dictionary is based on a wide variety of narrative sources and archival materials in the major languages of Islam. Additionally, it makes extensive use of the ethnographic and archeological evidence and folklore. Chronologically, this volume covers the period from the introduction of the Muslim religion into what was to become the former Russian empire up to present.
