This book is the fourth volume of the cycle of studies on the history of the Russian Social Democrats (Menshevism), but presents an independent complete work. It studies the formation of the Menshevik party after splitting with the Bolshevik party in 1908. The author, using a wide range of sources, describes the position of the Menshevik party on key issues in the post-revolution and the WWI years, and their differences with the Bolshevik party. In the previous third volume, Urilov showed how the differences in opinion over one paragraph of the party bylaws grew into two different party platforms which defined the social-democratic movement in the 20th century.
