This book by geographer and vice-president of the Russian Geographical Society Petr Semenov - Tian-Shanskii (1827-1914), is about his trip to the mountains and country of Tien Shan in 1856-1857. He was practically the first European who got into this country, made a map of the mountains, studied Lake Issyk-Kul, opened the Syrdar`ia River, and described the nature and animals of South-Central Siberia, Central and North-East Asia. This trip and research made him a famous geographer, gave him an additional last name, and laid the basis for the subsequent expeditions to these lands.
