"Torgsin" was a wide spread chain of state stores where Russian citizens could buy food and luxuries in exchange for precious metals and foreign currency in 1931-35. Many civilians literally saved themselves from starvation this way. The collected treasuries were used by the soviet government to buy foreign technologies and machinery for the new industrial giants ( Magnitka, Kuznetsk, Uralmash, etc.). Hungry for foreign currencies "Torgsin" used all possible sources, including prostitution and other crimes. This book is about the history of "Torgsin", one of the sources of the forced industrialization of Russia. Bibliographical references.
