This volume of the series History of the House of Romanov in Memoirs of Contemporaries includes four works. The first, On Russia in the Reign of Aleksei Mikhailovich, is a unique description of Muscovy in the second half of the seventeenth by an officer of Posol`skii Prikaz (Ambassadors’ Department) G.K. Kotoshkin. The second work is the diary of General Patrick Gordon, a Scot who was in Russian service in 1663-1679 and advised Peter the First in all his military projects and novations. The third work is the travel diary of Ian Streis about the dramatic fate of the Russian leading ship Orel during the uprising led by Stepan Razin.
