This is a biography of Nikolai Pavlovich Ignat`ev (1832-1908), Ambassador to Constantinople in 1864-77, who participated in drawing up the San Stefano peace treaty of 1878, which resulted in the creation of the independent states of Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, and the Bulgarian principality. The Balkans was the most important area of Russian foreign affairs in the 1860-1870s. This book also tells the story of Ignat`ev`s family. Appendices include Ignat`ev`s letters and memoirs about him.
