Travel literature, or travelogue, was an especially popular genre in Russian literature in the nineteenth century. This monograph studies the evolution of this genre from its birth to the end of the epoch of Romanticism and the correlations between authenticity and fantasy in the author`s self reflection. Among the writers whose travelogues are included in this analysis are: Radishchev, Karamzin, Pushkin, Zhukovskii, Batiushkov, Bestuzhev-Marlinskii, and Murav`ev-Apostol.
