Language: RussianAmong the millions of innocent victims of the nation-wide genocide in the Soviet Union were many artists. Creative work from the GULAG as artistic expression in Russia was presented to the general public for the first time in 1989 at the exhibition dedicated to the memory of the victims of Stalinist repression. The range of exhibits is broad: graphics, painting, decorative arts, etc. many of them are made from very unusual materials because of lack of choice in the camps. Some of them were brought by survivors or their relatives, another group is collected in the course of several expeditions to Solovetsky island and other former camp sites. Each of these objects reveals not only the depravity of totalitarianism; it is also a desperate signal of distress from a human being. Parallel text in Russian and English.
