The Institute of Noble Girls was created by Catherine the Great in 1764 and was patronized by the Russian Imperial family thereafter until 1917. This institution was supposed to create a new strain of civilized women. The main subjects were foreign languages and "noble sciences": dancing, music, singing, manners, etc. But the motive behind all these classes were the education of heart and mind. The students of the Institute were separated from their family from early childhood. This book includes memoirs of five alumnae: A. Engel`gardt, T. Morozova, G. Rzhevskaia, A. Sterligova, and E.
