Mazokhin, O., Gladkov, T Menzhinskii: Intelligent s Lubianki
[ Menzhinskii: Intellectual from Lubianka]
Moscow: Iauza, Eksmo, 2005 442 p. [16 ill.] Hardcover. 13 x 20 cm ISBN: 5699099425 Language: RussianViacheskav Menzhinskii (1874-1934) belonged to the Russian intelligentsia and nobility by birth, and despised violence in all its manifestations. However he, a writer and chemist, succeeded Feliks Dzerzhinskii as the chairman of the OGPU (1926-1934). This organization under Menzhinskii`s leadership fought against Stalin`s opposition, conducted the mandatory and repressive collectivization, liquidated the strata of well-off peasants and farmers, undertook several secret operations against Russian emigres, including Syndicate-2. Though this political biography of him is quite complimentary, it still contains interesting facts about the everyday activities of the OGPU and its role in protecting the interests of the young Bolshevik dictatorship. Appendices include statistical information about OGPU (1926-34). Bibliography.
