This political biography of Lev Mekhlis (1889-1941) is based on newly declassified archival documents. Mekhlis was a member of the Stalin`s political elite for almost 25 years: his personal assistant, the chief editor of the newspaper "Pravda", chief of the Main Political Department of the Red Army (Glavnoe Politicheskoe Upravlenie) during the Russian-Finnish war and later up to 1941. He was one of very few of Stalin`s comrades-in-arms who died in his own bed. The author focuses on the pre-war and war years in the Mekhlis biography, and his role in the losses Russia had in the first year of the Great Patriotic War. Appendices.
