This is the fifth volume of the series on the Eastern Christian world. The current volume is a reprint of the book published by Archbishop Leonid (Lev Aleksandrovich Kavelin, 1822-1891) who was a celibate priest at the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem for 16 months (1857-58). He had a chance not only to fulfill his duty but also to travel in the Holy Land. Later he returned there as the Head of the Mission. At the request of Grand Duke Constantin Nikolaevich, Kavelin wrote a guide to Jerusalem and its sacred places. This guide is based on his own experience and the accounts of other Russian Orthodox priests. It covers not only spiritual history but also architecture, politics and everyday life, ethnography, topography, and economy of this land. Other volumes and standing order for the series are also available. Profusely illustrated.
