This monograph studies the leading role of the USSR in formation of a military block and political opposition in Europe and the bipolar world in the first decade after WWII (1945-1955). The author analyzes the motivation of the soviet leadership towards military alliances, organizational structures of the blocks, and the complicated relationships within them. Bystrova also compares military and political doctrines of both blocks, analyzes their propaganda campaigns and their effectiveness in mobilizing public opinion on both sides, the correlation between propaganda and diplomacy.
