A Collection of spiritual works by Nikolai Gogol`, including "Excerpts from Correspondence with Friends (1847)". The “Excerpts”, a book in its own right, which for Gogol marked a turning point in his spiritual development, was met coldly both by the general public and the clergy, and Belinski’s low opinion about it was the determining one for many generations to come. Gogol’s inner crisis, the fruit of which was “The Excerpts” resulted from the conflict between his religious aspirations and literary genius. According to Gogol’s view, in order to ensure its future, Russia must become aware of its spiritual poverty and realize the immense opportunities of a comparatively young Christian power. Also included are an introduction "Spiritual Biography of Gogol" (pp. 7-117) by V.A. Voropaev, comments to "Excerpts" and to "Thoughts on Divine Liturgy" by V.A. Voropaev, S. Shevyrev, M. Men`shikov, and Ignatius Brianchaninov.
