This handbook contains archival documents on the history of the soviet organization which was the state secret police and punitive organ. During the soviet period, 1917-1991, the organization changed its name and organizational structure six times, but hardly changed its nature and its role in strengthening the totalitarian regime. The documents collected here reflect the evolution of the structure, chronicle of renaming its divisions, rotation of personnel, biographical index of high rank officers. This first edition (1997) cover the history up to 1960, the second edition goes till 1991, the year of dissolution of the USSR.
