Vospitatel`noe Obshchestvo Blagorodnykh Devits ( in short Smol`nyi Institute) was the first Russian school for women founded by Catherine the Great in 1762 and led by Ivan Betskoi (1704-1795). The Tsaritsa paid serious attention to her school. The first school was located in Smol`nyi Palace. According to the founder, the students were to improve the manners and traditions of Russian society and make them more humane. Over its 150 years of existence the school proved this idea to be correct. Many graduates of this school not only became good mothers and wives, but also came to Russian history as notable personalities who inspired many Russian musicians, artists, and poets. This book contains lives of N. Borshchova, A. Davydova, E. Denis`eva, E. Khovanskaia, A. Kern, E. Khrushcheva, A. Levshina, E. Molchanova, E. Nelidova, F. Rzhevskaia, and many others.
