[ Lost lands of Russia : Seceded republics]
Moscow: Veche, 2007 491 p. [16 ill.] Hardcover. 17 x 25 cm ISBN: 5250026656 Language: RussianA new book by military historian A. Shirokorad deals with the relations of Russia with the former Soviet Union republics and after 1991 independent states: Baltic states, Belorussia, Central Asian states, Moldova, Transcaucasia, and Ukraine. Some of them were part of Old Rus since the 9th-11th centuries, the others joined it in the 17th-19th centuries. Why did some of them become members of the Union in 1918-1922 while others became just administrative units? Why did the Bolsheviks ban publications about the interethnic wars in these territories of 1918-1921? Why did many of these bloody conflicts burst into flame again at the end of the 1980s? The author studies the history of these territories before and after joining Russia, the circumstances which led to this decision, and the changes which happened to these lands during the soviet period.
