It is a monograph about the plays, poetry and prose of the little known Russian writer Mikhail Nikitich Murav`ev (1757-1807). M. Murav`ev was a man of many talents, interests and knowledge. An outstanding actor of the Russian Enlightenment he seems not to have had an equal at that time in education and variety of social and artistic activities. Like many of the Russian nobility he first had a military career, then a very successful civil career: he became a tutor of Russian princes, vice-minister of Public Education, etc. He was a founder of the first four Russian Universities. Vladimir Nikolaevich Toporov (1928-2005), winner of the Solzhenitsyn prize in 1998, is a scholar working in the fields of linguistics, mythology, religion, history of literature and semiotics.
