This is a memoir of a founder of the Souz Osvobozhdeniia (Narodnoi Svobody), then the Constitutional-Democratic Party Prince Pavel Dolgorukov (1866-1927). The fate of the Constitutional Democratic Party (Kadets) was profoundly tragic. The Liberal alternative for social development to autocracy offered by the Kadets was rejected by the authorities and not understood by the people. Dolgorukov came to understand the necessity of a military dictatorship, participated in the White movement and emigrated in 1920. Later he secretly returned to Russia to see the situation there for himself, was arrested and shot in 1927. Half the book is taken by a memoir about him by his twin brother Petr and other people who knew Pavel Dolgorukov.
