This volume of the series History of the House of Romanov in Memoirs of Contemporaries includes three works about Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, later Russian Tsar Pavel the First (November 1796 to March 1801). He was a very controversial person. Pushkin called him the romantic emperor, while others saw him as a tyrant. Pavel had the best teachers he could have, he knew several European languages, and was widely educated in the sciences. Contents: Diary of S.A. Poroshin, Pavel`s teacher of mathematics; Notes of Russian diplomat Prince B. Kurakin, Pavel`s friend from childhood; Pavel`s letters and his political doctrine and the ideal state as he saw it. Many of these ideas were implemented after he was crowned. Pavel the First may be compared with prince Hamlet in many ways. Name and geographical dictionary. Glossary.
