He was the Commissar of Internal Affairs in 1936-1938 and the head of NKVD when almost 700 thousand people were killed and several millions were imprisoned in the campaign of political repressions. The second hero of this book is Joseph Stalin who "grew Ezhov as a gardener cultivates a favorite plant" (A. Fadeev). This book is based on declassified archival documents, including his interrogations in the NKVD after he was arrested in 1938. The main focus is made on the relationship between Stalin and Ezhov from December 1934 (the assassination of S. Kirov) to the last day of Ezhov`s life.
