He spent fourteen years in Stalin`s camps and was arrested four times. In between his sentences he served in the Russian army during WWII, graduated from the university, and defended his doctoral thesis. Many of the memoirs were written for this publication. The book also includes unpublished works by Gumilev, materials, and documents about his life. The compilers prepared two more volumes of unpublished works and correspondence of L. Gumilev: Dar Slova mne Byl Obeshchan ot Prirody and L.N. Gumilev v Perepiske.
