This is the first volume of the Russian Folklore Collection, Series “Bylinas”, started by the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskii Dom). The series is an academic publication with introduction, commentaries, versions, and indices. It will consist of twenty-five volumes and include bylinas of the Russian North, regions of the European Russia, the Volga region, the Urals, and Siberia. Every volume in a sub-series includes an article about ethnic cultural history of the region, its folklore, dialects, music to bylinas, history of collecting and publishing folklore in the region, and much more. The first two volumes embrace bylinas of the Pechora River region in the Russian North. Volume one contains 101 illustrations, both black and white and color. Many bylinas are provided with scores.
