The 59 articles of this volume were published in journals and newspapers in the 1860-1880s and are for the first time collected for the new edition of Kostomarov`s complete works. The main subject of the book is Ukrainian history and culture. The author was a passionate Ukrainian patriot, who defended the use of his native language in literature and education. Some publications contain his harsh polemics against "Normanist" theories about the origin of Ancient Rus`. The topics of four of the articles are the "Jewish question"; author justifies pogroms as a natural reaction to harmful exploitation of the farmers and Cossacks by Jews and sustains the accusation of Jews as ritual murderers of innocent Christian children.
