The majority of food in Russia is, in fact, produced by the people in their spare time, including all their days off and holidays, on small plots of land. Two leading geographers Tat`iana Nefedova (Institute of Geography, Russia) and Judith Pallot (Oxford University, UK) study the full spectrum of the farming sector of Russian: from the Polar circle to the fertile south of Russia, from private country peasant farms near Moscow to the provinces, from very effective agricultural enterprises to a poor small vegetable garden that provides just enough to save the owners from begging and starvation. The authors analyze published and unpublished data and come to very interesting results. Bibliography. Illustrations. Summary in English.
