This monograph is about Russian poet V.A. Zhukovskii (1783-1852) as an interpreter of modern Russian and European history. The poet sought in the past for "the code" which can be used for understanding the present and foreseeing the future. Vinitskii analyzes Zhukovskii`s poems portraying the current historical process in a metaphorical way, and singles out the poet`s strategy and mechanism for transforming historical material into a poetic image-idea.
