This two-volume publication presents the literary criticism of a well known Russian historian of literature and literary critic Irina Rodnianskaia. Literature of the last four decades is analyzed in the context of literary trends of the 19th-20th centuries and compared with classic works of Russian literature by Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol`, Dostoevskii, Blok, Platonov, and Zabolotskii. Among the modern Russian authors included in the analysis are: A. Bitov, O. Chukhontsev, V. Makanin, and A. Kushner. The last two chapters of the second volume deal with relations between specific social and ideological themes and the literary genres they embody. Bibliographical references.
