In the twentieth century Russia lost its peasant as a class and social group with its own specific culture, philosophy, and morality. This process was called "razkrestianivanie". This book is based on oral memoirs of peasants from the Viatka region in the Russian North where the author is from. They are about the everyday life, traditions, beliefs, values, and customs of the Russian peasantry. It is the first book on oral history of this people of the first half of the 20th century. The author analyzes the consequences of the dramatic social shift which happened to his countrymen.
