This is the first academic publication of seven stories by Russian writer Novodvorskii (literary pseudonym Osipovich, 1853-1882). He published only eight stories during his short literary life. All of them are about the social and political life of Russia in the 1870s. Maksim Gor`kii found Novodvorskii "as open-hearted as were Uspenskii and Garshin". Biographical essay about Novodvorskii and comments are by V.I. Bazanova.
