A. Kartashev (1875-1960), was one of the leaders of the St. Petersburg Religious Society, minister of confessions in the Interim Government of 1917, professor of St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris from 1920. This work The Ecumenical Councils was published after his death in 1963. It covers a crucial period in the history of Christianity, 325 - 825, when most of the canonical norms were formed, and Christianity became the universal world religion. Kartashev is also the author of another fundamental work, Essays on the History of the Russian Orthodox Church, also available.
