The life of Roman Medoks (1795-1859), gambler, pretender, and provocateur, was full of intrigues and dramatics. He was imprisoned by Aleksandr I, and spent 14 years there as an enemy of the state. Upon his release he arrived in the Caucasus with false documents, collected large sums of money from various sources to organize the militia to fight Napoleon. He was arrested again and then released by Nicholas I in 1828, spent several years at liberty, got acquainted with the Decembrists and even appeared in the city of Irkutsk in 1830. He was again jailed, this time for 22 years. Medoks was pardoned after the Death of Nicholas the First but outlived him only three years. This book is a collection of materials about him and his personal diary.
