This book continues the series of book on the metaphysics of St. Petersburg started by " Severnaia Stolitsa: Metafizika Peterburga" (1998), " Nachala i Osnovaniia" (2003) and " Nemetskii Dukh" (2003). The current volume focuses on French-Russian cultural contacts and their role in forming the appearance and spirit of "St. Petersburg civilization": architecture and monumental art, literature and ballet, everyday life, philosophy, esoteric and social thought. "The Genius of France literally saddled the genius of Russia" wrote Joseph de Maistre in 1810. D. Spivak studies the French influence in the background of the peripetia of uneasy relations between the two nations in 18th - 20th centuries. Bibliographical references.
