This book in addition to the poem Dead Souls includes another famous work by Nikolai Gogol` (1809-1852), "Vubrannye Mesta iz Perepiski..". The “Excerpts”, a book in its own right, which for Gogol marked a turning point in his spiritual development. Gogol’s inner crisis, the fruit of which was “The Excerpts” resulted from the conflict between his religious aspirations and literary genius. According to Gogol’s view, in order to ensure its future, Russia must become aware of its spiritual poverty and realize the immense opportunities of a comparatively young Christian power. The style of the book is influenced by the writings of Church Fathers and the religious poetry of the 18th and 19th centuries. Also included are critical articles about N. Gogol`, comments, chronology of Gogol`s life, list of recommended readings.
