Biographies of Russian writers compiled in this book were published about 100 years ago as separate books in the series "Lives of Notable People" by Florentii Pavlenkov (1839-1900), book publisher and editor. The series was the first of its kind, and it was very successful. The authors of these biographical essays are, correspondingly: S.M. Briliant, V.V. Ogarkov, A.M. Skabichevskii, E. Solov`ev. Also included are two essays: about the authors and an afterword by the compiler of the book.
